Statistics - The science of conducting studies to collect, organize, summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions from data (p. 1-3, Bluman).
1. Need 3 ring binder for notes and classwork. 2. Graded on Classwork, class participation, homework, quizzes, tests and notebook completion. 3. Textbook is Elementary Statistics by Bluman 4. We will try to do some of the homework/classwork in class. Especially since Excel is the most common program used for charting, graphing, etc. Last year one student did do all the work on Libre Office on his Mac so it is possible to use your Macs once you get them. 5. I may try doing a new educational method call "flipping" where the student does the reading and studying outside of class and then classwork problems in class. Guessing Age Study. Students given images of various people and the ages of the people in the images is guessed. Information is organized about the absolute value of the error in the guess and the average is found. Class discusses discusses the concepts of data collection and variation in relation to this demonstration..
A second demonstration that consist of collecting information from students regarding number of children in the family. Data is recorded. Class discusses how to set up the data for easy viewing and discussing. Data is entered into an Excel spreadsheet. A column chart is made. Vocabulary - population, sample, descriptive, inferential, variable, data. Classwork - homework Read pp. 1-2 to 1-6 and answer questions on the top of p. 1-6. . Classwork and homework Finish Reading Chapter 1 - up to the summary. Do the Review pp. 29-30 1-25. Quest on Tuesday on Chapter 1. I will ask a selected group of these questions and possibly a few others.

Hand back tests and go over. Do the problem #4 NFL team salaries on p. 61. In class together do the 3 types of charts. Write the definition on the top of the page. Look at the difference between the hand drawn and the ones done in excel. Histogram, Frequency Polygon, Ogive(cumulative polygon).
